SUMMARY:Concrete Carbon Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability and environmental product declarations (EPDs) are increasingly part of industry discussions\, yet many construction professionals still lack a clear\, practical understanding of what lower-carbon concrete is\, how it is produced\, and how it can be specified and delivered on real projects. Concrete Carbon Conversations is a dynamic\, interactive adult-learning session designed to close this gap. The program equips participants with foundational knowledge of lower-carbon concrete and the rapidly evolving low-carbon construction landscape\, enabling more informed decisions across design\, specification\, production\, and construction. Do you have the knowledge foundation to confidently act on lower-carbon concrete opportunities in project design and construction? After this learning activity participants will be able to: 1. Understand the definitions of GHGs\, embodied carbon\, and EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations). Find\, interpret\, and utilize concrete EPDs. 2. Recognize the key reduction levers available today for concrete and how to specify them in projects. 3. Develop a carbon budget with reductions for concrete on projects.Speakers: Matt DalkieMatt has worked in the cement industry for his entire career and is currently the Senior Director\, Industrial Decarbonization and Sustainability for the Cement Association of Canada. Before this position\, he held engineering and sustainability positions in manufacturing plants and technical centers in NZ\, UK\, France\, and Canada. He has a detailed knowledge and understanding of cement manufacturing and the production of concrete and concrete products\, is active in developing EPDs\, and works on PCR development committees for cement\, concrete\, and concrete products.\nMatt holds a degree in Chemical Technology\, is a LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction and holds a variety of NRMCA certifications. He serves on CSA Concrete (CSA A23.1/2) and Cement (CSA A3000) standards development committees\, chairing the A3000 committee and the sustainability subcommittees for both standards. He also sits on ACI committees for Concrete Sustainability\, Alternative Cements\, Concrete Durability Code\, and Low-Carbon Concrete Code. Matt is a registered Professional Engineer in BC\nGlen FurtadoGlen Furtado is a Professional Engineer and is the Senior Director of Construction Innovation for the Cement Association of Canada. He serves on several industry Boards and Committees including the Boards of Concrete BC\, Concrete Alberta\, and Concrete Sask and is currently the Chair of the Transportation Association of Canada's (TACs) Environment and Climate Change Council. In his role with the Cement Association\, Glen helps designers\, architects\, and engineers meet their project goals through incorporation of performance-based specifications\, education and training\, and use of lower carbon building materialsDr. R. Douglas HootonACI Honorary Member\, Dr. R. Douglas Hooton is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto He is also President of Concrete Durability Associates Inc. in Toronto. His research over more than 50 years has focussed on cementitious materials\, test method development\, concrete durability and sustainability. At ACI\, he chaired C201 on Concrete Durability until 2025\, and currently chairs ACI C130A Sustainability of Constituent Materials of Concrete and ACI C233 on Slag Cement. He is past Chair of CSA A23.1 and currently chairs TSC4 as well as the SCM TSC on CSA A3000. At ASTM\, he chairs C09.51 on sulfate resistance of concrete and C09.66 on fluid transport in concrete. He is also an Honorary member of RILEM\, the Institute of Concrete Technology (UK)\, as well as of ASTM Committees C01 & C09. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering\, Canadian Society of Civil Engineers\, the Engineering Institute of Canada\, and ASTM\nRegistration: $50.00 (Includes lunch and materials)
